Arte Útil Archive 2.0

Arte Útil Archive 2.0: https://arte-util.org

Collective Works and allsiz.es designed the second iteration of the Arte Útil Archive website in collaboration with Alessandra Saviotti and Gemma Medina Estupiñán. This project builds on the initial database, which was developed as part of Constructlab for Tania Bruguera’s exhibition “The Museum of Arte Útil” at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven in 2014.

Now functioning as a standalone platform, the Arte Útil Archive serves the Asociación de Arte Útil and the diverse range of cultural players that are part of it. The updated website continues to make the archive’s expansive collection of case studies accessible, showcasing projects that transform art into a tool for social change.

This upgrade ensures that the platform remains a dynamic and adaptable resource, supporting cultural practitioners and institutions committed to rethinking the role of art in society.

About Arte Útil

Arte Útil—“useful art” in Spanish—reimagines art as a tool for societal transformation, focusing on initiatives that create tangible benefits for communities. Highlighting projects from alternative economies to grassroots governance, the archive showcases how artistic thinking can challenge traditional frameworks, empower collective action, and address urgent social issues.

These projects are guided by criteria developed by Tania Bruguera and curators from the Queens Museum, Van Abbemuseum, and Grizedale Arts, emphasizing user-driven outcomes, sustainability, and aesthetics as systems of transformation. The platform serves as a dynamic resource for cultural practitioners and institutions committed to rethinking the role of art in shaping a more equitable world.

Arte Útil projects should:

1) Propose new uses for art within society
2) Use artistic thinking to challenge the field within which it operates
3) Respond to current urgencies
4) Operate on a 1:1 scale
5) Replace authors with initiators and spectators with users
6) Have practical, beneficial outcomes for its users
7) Pursue sustainability
8) Re-establish aesthetics as a system of transformation
