Spree Space @ Spreepark

Interventions developed within Constructlab at Spreepark Art Space, Berlin. The Spree Space works reimagine the park’s layered past, transforming relics of amusement and traces of nature into playful, evolving installations that invite new narratives to take root.

Spree Space Act 02

Spree Space Act 02 is a project situated along the former railway line on the edge of Spreepark. The work brings together objects once part of the amusement park. A car from the Spreeblitz roller coaster, vehicles from the Hutbahn, and a life-size dinosaur have been reassembled into a new sequence of small pavilions. These structures echo the colourful arcades that once animated the park. Each object carries traces of the site’s past, while their new arrangement creates space for fresh stories to emerge. The installation becomes a place where memory and imagination meet.

Illustrations are integrated into the work, blending fragments of the park with elements from the surrounding landscape; plants, birds, and other animals. This illustrative approach was first introduced in Spree Space Act 01 on the wall of the nearby workshop hall.

Nature plays a key role in shaping new narratives. Birds like the Yellow Warbler and the Blackcap have returned to the area. Japanese Knotweed, a fast-growing plant with both invasive and regenerative qualities, is part of the park’s ongoing transformation. These natural elements are reflected in the illustrations and woven into the design.

Spree Space Act 02 is part of an ongoing process. It builds on what is already present and invites visitors to see the park as a place in flux—shaped by time, memory, and change.

Past Pleasure Exhibition at Spreepark Art Space, Berlin

This exhibition at Spreepark Art Space reflected on the history of Kulturpark Plänterwald and Spreepark Berlin, with exhibition design and contributions from Constructlab.

The Past Pleasure exhibition (Vergangenes Vergnügen), opened in November 2024, was curated by Christian Hiller and Spreepark Art Space. It features contributions from Doris and Hinrich Baller, Constructlab, Christiane Eisler, Andrea Pichl, Anselm Reyle, and Anne Waak, among others.

Constructlab’s exhibition design, inspired by colorful park arcades, recreates a mock amusement park. The exhibition combines personal memories, photographs, and artistic reflections, offering both humorous and critical perspectives on Kulturpark Plänterwald during GDR times and the later Spreepark Berlin.

Divided into three themes:

  • Welcome to Happiness explores “Kulti” as a meeting place for happy people.
  • Park as a Stage reflects on the park as a controlled space of longing, including Christiane Eisler’s photos of 1980s punks in the park.
  • Behind the Scenes reveals the park’s construction and redevelopment with Doris and Hinrich Baller’s planning drawings, addressing the challenges of amusement parks.

Highlights include Andrea Pichl’s installation Plänterwald on transformation and decay, Anselm Reyle’s haunting photo series, and Anne Waak’s audio play Life under the Ferris Wheel, weaving visitor memoirs into a unifying narrative. Constructlab also added an interactive selfie installation inspired by the park’s scenery.

Spreespace Act 01 at Spreepark Art Space, Berlin

Constructlab transformed Spreepark’s workshop hall into an imaginative gateway, blending relics of amusement rides with the park’s thriving flora and fauna.

Created at the invitation of curators Christian Hiller and artistic director Katja Aßmann for the Spreepark Art Space, the project reactivates a large workshop hall near the Eierhäuschen, once used for repairing rides, as one of the park’s future entrances. Hidden during its original use, the hall now hosts workshops enabling artists to shape visions for the park’s future.

Stored here during renovations were relics like white-water ride wagons, bumper cars, fiberglass dinosaurs, and Chapeau Claque vehicles. Constructlab’s Spreespace Act 01 installation preserved their memory with wooden eyes / peepholes offering glimpses into the hall and its hidden treasures.

For the hall’s gable wall, Peter Zuiderwijk designed two large-format graphics merging amusement park relics with the thriving flora and fauna overtaking them, creating surreal visual hybrids. This intervention bridges the park’s interior with its surroundings, transforming the space near the Eierhäuschen and the Spree River.
